What Is True Stories from the Obit Files?
People You Never Knew, But Won’t Forget.
True Stories from the Obit Files is a short documentary podcast that shares real stories pulled from real obituaries — honoring the quiet lives that shaped the world in unforgettable ways.
Every Monday, host Steve Rhode shares one true story pulled from a published obituary. These aren’t celebrities or headlines. These are the postal workers, schoolteachers, nurses, grandparents, and volunteers who held their communities together in ways that only became clear after they were gone.
Each 6–8 minute episode invites listeners to slow down and notice the quiet greatness around us — and to remember that every person carries a story worth telling.
How the Podcast Works
What sources are used?
We use only real, publicly shared obituaries — the words families chose to honor their loved ones. Nothing is fictionalized or dramatized. These are real lives, remembered respectfully.
What makes this show different?
Unlike celebrity podcasts or true crime shows, True Stories from the Obit Files finds depth, connection, and emotional weight in the lives most people overlook. These are not eulogies or dramatizations — they’re human stories, thoughtfully told.
Who are the people featured?
Our stories span every walk of life — farmers, WWII vets, lunch ladies, custodians, neighborhood helpers. Their lives may not have made the news, but they made a difference.
Authentic. Respectful. Human.
Every episode begins with a real obituary and ends with a moment of quiet reflection. We don’t chase drama. We chase truth.
Why These Stories Matter
In a world flooded with clickbait and celebrity gossip, True Stories from the Obit Files reminds us what really lasts: kindness, persistence, loyalty, service. The unsung lives. The invisible extraordinary.
These stories show us that:
- Real impact doesn’t always come with applause
- Legacy is often built in small, consistent moments
- Communities are sustained by people who show up — quietly, faithfully, generously
